Fayston Food Service Program Awarded “One in a Melon”!
Congratulations to Fayston and Waitsfield School’s Food Service Program for winning the USDA “One in a Melon” award for our farm to school program! Chef Cheryl Joslin, deserves much credit for building and sustaining an enviable school lunch program that we all can be proud of here at Fayston School. I would like to take this opportunity to strongly encourage families to participate in our school lunch program. In order to keep programs such as ours, we need your participation!
How did our food service program win this recognition? Parents, teachers, community stakeholders, and students were invited to visit USDA’s Farm to School Census website and nominate their favorite farm to school program to receive the award. According to the Farm to School Census, a total of 5,254 districts participated across the U.S. From that pool, 50 school districts received the “One in a Melon” award.
All over the country schools are redesigning their menus to incorporate local foods, harvesting vegetables out of school gardens, visiting farms, and meeting farmers/food producers to learn more about where food comes from.
